Part of assignment 3 was to visit this website http://www.servicedesigntools.org/taxonomy/term/1 and learn more about the design methods that are used in service design. Some of these tools can be applied in every project of every discipline, especial at the research and development process. In the past projects, which were group projects I have used some of these tools with others in order to come up with and develop ideas.
The tools that I have used before are: Mind Mapping, Affinity Diagram and Mock Up, although I knew them as: Mind Mapping ( the same), Brainstorming and Model making... All three tools are very useful, brainstorming is usually used at the very beginning of a project it's a very quick and easy method to get initial ideas down on a piece of paper or board, you then can take the ideas, analyze them and separate them into different categories by Mind mapping. We were introduced mind mapping in our design studies lecture and assignments and I have been using it quite often in order to develop my ideas and design thinking more thoroughly. After exploring all the aspects of our project we then can play with our design and change it by making a scale size model and developing it as we go along.
What we didn't use in the group projects and I think it is extremely important is the: Group Sketching tool. Of course that doesn't mean that we didn't do any sketching, after all, that is what we do most, but we didn't get together as a group to do quick sketches, something like brainstorming our ideas without having to write anything. That would have been a lot easier, rather than sketching our ideas alone, then trying to incorporate every bodies ideas in the final outcome.
I noticed while I was reading some cases that a lot of these tools can also be used in other disciplines, and I don't mean Jewelry or Product design, I mean other courses like Bussiness Management, Medicine etc because everybody at some point in their lives have to be a member of a group, whether it's for research or at a job.
